Each year, over 100,000 people and 100s of organisations like Closer Care celebrate National Families Week (16th – 22nd May) – Australia’s annual celebration of families.
National Families Week is a time to celebrate with your family, make contact with your extended family and friends, and share in the enjoyment of family activities within the wider community. It is a time to celebrate the meaning of family and to make the most of family life.
Since the inception of National Families Week, parenting support programs have been introduced to empower parents to help their children reach their full potential in life. Research shows the significant value of building strong relationships among the adults in a baby and young child’s life and the positive impact those relationships can have on the family as a whole. We know that supporting the positive mental health of babies, toddlers and parents benefits us all through things like more resilient families, better educational outcomes and in the long term, a stronger society. Positive parenting is a key influence on children’s development. Wider family involvement can also assist families to cope with stress. Fortunately, the best things you can do for your child to prepare them for life are also the simplest and most natural. This years theme is ‘Stronger Families, Stronger Communities’. This theme continues to highlight the important role families play as the central building block of our communities and deliver the message that community wellbeing is enhanced by family wellbeing.
