NDIS Changes 2026: What Participants and Families Should Know

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) continues to evolve as the government works to improve how the scheme operates. Over the past year, several updates and reforms have been announced, with some changes expected to begin gradually from 2026.

For participants, families and providers, staying informed can help ensure everyone continues to access the supports they need with confidence.

A new approach to NDIS planning

One of the most significant updates is the introduction of a new NDIS planning framework.

Under this approach, participants will complete a support needs assessment with a trained assessor. The aim is to better understand a participant’s daily life, support needs and goals so that plans can be developed more consistently across the scheme.

The new planning process is expected to begin rolling out gradually from mid-2026. Many participants will not notice immediate changes, and existing plans will remain in place until a participant transitions to the new planning framework.

Clearer guidance on NDIS supports

Recent legislative changes have also focused on clarifying which supports the NDIS funds. The goal is to provide clearer guidance about disability-related supports funded through the scheme and which services may be provided through other systems such as health or education.

These updates aim to improve transparency and consistency in funding decisions across the NDIS.

Strengthening quality and safety

Another focus of recent reforms is improving quality and oversight across the disability sector.

From July 2026, some providers, including Supported Independent Living providers and certain platform-based providers, will be required to register with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. This change is designed to strengthen participant safety and ensure providers meet consistent quality standards.

What this means for participants

While changes to the NDIS are often discussed in the news, most reforms are focused on improving fairness, clarity and long-term sustainability of the scheme.

For participants and families, it is important to remember that:

Current plans remain in place until a participant moves into the new planning framework.

Participants will receive information before changes affect their plan.

Support coordinators and providers can help participants understand any updates when they occur.

Looking ahead

The NDIS continues to play a vital role in supporting people with disability to live more independently and participate fully in their communities.

As the scheme evolves, access to clear information and trusted support remains important. At Closer Care, we are committed to supporting participants and families by providing person-centred services and helping people navigate the NDIS with confidence.
