At Closer Care, we believe that some of life’s most valuable lessons happen outside a classroom.
Our recent 6-week OzHarvest NEST Cooking Program gave participants the opportunity to learn practical cooking skills while developing confidence, independence and meaningful social connections.
While everyone enjoyed preparing and sharing delicious meals together, the program was about much more than food.
Building Independence Through Everyday Skills
Cooking is an important life skill that supports greater independence.
Throughout the program, participants learned practical techniques they can continue using at home, including:
- Preparing simple, nutritious meals
- Following recipes step by step
- Working safely in the kitchen
- Planning and organising tasks
- Cleaning up and working as a team
These everyday skills help build confidence and encourage participants to become more independent in their daily lives.
Connection Happens Around the Table
One of the most rewarding parts of the program was seeing new friendships develop.
Preparing meals together naturally encourages conversation, teamwork and collaboration. Participants supported one another, celebrated each other’s successes and enjoyed sharing the meals they had created together.
For many people living with disability, opportunities for genuine social connection can make a significant difference to overall wellbeing.
Developing Confidence
Each week, participants became more comfortable trying new recipes, using different kitchen equipment and taking on new responsibilities.
Small achievements quickly turned into growing confidence.
Watching participants become proud of what they had created reminded us that confidence is often built one small success at a time.
A Safe and Supportive Environment
Learning something new can feel intimidating, which is why creating a welcoming environment is so important.
Our team focused on encouraging every participant at their own pace, ensuring everyone felt included, respected and supported throughout the program.
There was plenty of laughter, encouragement and shared success along the way.
Supporting NDIS Community Participation
Programs like our cooking classes support a range of NDIS goals, including:
- Building daily living skills
- Increasing independence
- Improving social and communication skills
- Developing confidence
- Encouraging community participation
- Building meaningful relationships
These outcomes extend well beyond the kitchen and can positively impact many areas of everyday life.
