Disability Support Pension (DSP) in Australia: What You Need to Know in 2025

Navigating government support can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re living with a permanent disability. The Disability Support Pension (DSP) is designed to provide financial assistance to Australians whose physical, intellectual, or psychiatric condition significantly limits their ability to work.

In this 2025 guide, we break down everything you need to know about DSP payments, eligibility, how to apply and how Closer Care, your trusted NDIS provider in Sydney, can support you through every step.

How Much Is the DSP in 2025?

If you’re eligible, here’s what you can receive fortnightly as a single adult aged 21 or over:

  • Base rate: $860.60

  • Pension supplement: $69.60

  • Energy supplement: $14.10
    Total: $944.30 per fortnight

Your actual payment may vary depending on your relationship status, housing situation, and any additional income or assets.

DSP Increases in 2025

To help pensioners keep up with rising living costs, Centrelink adjusts the DSP rate twice a year in March and September. These updates ensure you can better manage everyday expenses like rent, groceries, healthcare, and energy bills.

Who Is Eligible for DSP?

To receive DSP, you must meet specific non-medical and medical criteria:

Non-Medical Requirements:

  • Be between 16 years old and Age Pension age

  • Be an Australian resident (generally for at least 10 years)

Meet income and assets tests

Medical Requirements:

  • Have a permanent disability or medical condition

  • Be unable to work more than 15 hours per week

Score 20+ points on the Centrelink Impairment Tables

How Is DSP Calculated?

  • You can earn up to $180 per fortnight with no reduction in your payment.

  • Any amount over that reduces your payment by 50 cents per dollar.

  • Asset limits vary depending on whether you own your home.

If you’re unsure where you stand, Closer Care can help you assess your eligibility and guide you through the process.

Not Eligible for DSP? Other Support Options Exist

If you’re not eligible for the Disability Support Pension, there are still other forms of assistance available:

  • JobSeeker Payment – for people with temporary illnesses or injuries

  • Carer Payment or Carer Allowance

NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) – offers funding for support workers, therapies, and assistive technology (note: NDIS is not income support)

How to Apply for DSP

You can submit your DSP application:

  • Online via Services Australia

  • By phone through Centrelink

  • In person at any Centrelink Service Centre

Make sure to include all necessary medical records, income statements, and proof of work history.
